Herrin- Arlie Allyn Smith, 73, of Herrin, passed away, surrounded by his family at 11:00 PM, Thursday, November 18, 2004 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion.
Allyn was born on November 10, 1931 in Carbondale to Arlie & Gladys (Brown) Smith. He married his loving wife of 51 years, Lela Batson, on June 28, 1953 in Carbondale. She survives of Herrin.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Combat Engineers in the US Army. He received the Purple Heart for injuries received during combat. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Once stateside, he worked as a carpenter for many years and in food service at the Veterans Administration Hospital. When he was able he loved to fish the many lakes and ponds of southern Illinois with his wife. He enjoyed traveling and playing the slots, but he most enjoyed his many grandchildren. He was runner-up for Father of the Year in 1978. He was of Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother; Harold Smith.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 22, 2004 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial with military rites provided by the Herrin VFW and American Legion will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM, Sunday, November 21, 2004 at the funeral home.
