Charles "Gene" E. Rothschild

Charles E. (Gene) Rothschild of Marion passed away in his home early morning on December 28, 2023.  Gene was born on August 29, 1936, the son of Phillip and Beulah Rothschild.

He served in the United States Army active duty during the Korean War from 1955 to 1958, attaining the rank of E5. Gene married Paula K. (nee Groner) Rothschild on May 3, 1957, in Anna, Illinois at the First Christian Church.  Together they shared 66 years of marriage.

He retired from Marion Pepsi in 1988 after 25 years of service in senior management.

Gene was a devoted son, husband, father, pawpaw, brother, and uncle.  He was a member of the Lake of Egypt Christian Church.  In years past he served as President of the Marion Jaycees, served on the Marion Park Board, and was active in the Marion Chamber of Commerce.  He considered his greatest achievements to be the time spent with his family, taking vacations, camping, coaching little league baseball, teaching his sons to hunt and fish, and just being a dad.  He will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Rothschild; his son, Gary D. Rothschild; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; his brother, David Rothschild; sister-in-law, Kay Rothschild; and brother-in-law, Richard Tweedy, all from southern Illinois, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins living nearby and in other states.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Beulah Rothschild; his younger sister, Phylis (Rothschild) Tweedy; his sons, Gregory D. and Steven L. Rothschild.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 11:00 – 1:00 PM at Binkley-Ross Funeral Home located at 1702 West Boulevard Street, Marion, Illinois. Funeral Services will follow with Minister Leroy Waggoner and Mr. Steve Higgs officiating. Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery immediately following the services.
