Herrin- Cleda Grandma Cleda Shemwell passed away at 2:25 AM, Saturday, March 27, 2004 in the comfort of her home with her family.
Cleda was born on November 21, 1927 in Carbondale to Isaac & Leona (Chumley) Leeper. She married her husband of fifty-seven years, Clarence Junior Shemwell, on June 28, 1947 in Mayfield, KY. He survives of Herrin.
Mrs. Shemwell was a loving homemaker and formerly worked as a waitress in Herrin at the Big Daddys and Illinois Caf Restaurants. Cleda was a proud mother and grandmother. She was protective of her family and was vocal in cheering them on at sporting events, being a member of the PTA, and carpooling the kids to Energy Grade School. She was well known for being a good cook, particularly her yellow dumplings and pies of various sorts. She would prepare each of her childrens favorite meals for them on their birthday. In her spare time, she enjoyed crafts such as sewing, crocheting, and handcrafts. She was a former member of the Eastern Star and White Shrine.
As much as she loved her family, Cledas first love was the Lord. She was an active member of Lone Oak Baptist Church. Cleda was leader of the Son Beams Sunday school class and sang specials such as God On The Mountain during church services.
