Gary Dale Hastings, 81, of Marion, Illinois, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 21, 1943, in Marion, Illinois, to Horace and Jewell Hastings, Gary lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to his family, and a steadfast commitment to his community and faith.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Gary served his country with honor. Following his service, he was a police officer for the city of Marion and then later embarked on a long career as a coal miner with Arch of Illinois coal mines. His strong work ethic and leadership earned him the respect of his peers. He serves as the president of U.M.W.A. local #1392, where he advocated tirelessly for his fellow miners.
On July 14, 1985, Gary married Robin Walters. Together, they built a family full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Gary found great joy in being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his family, whether it was watching his children and grandchildren play softball, cheering them on in motor sports, or passing down his passion for fishing and woodworking.
Gary was a member of Arnold View Freewill Baptist Church, where he faithfully served his congregation and community. His faith and integrity were cornerstones of his life, guiding him in all he did.
Gary’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a devoted family and a community forever touched by his kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication.
He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Robin Hastings; his children Lisa Parker, Julie Brumley, Wendy Wilkinson, Stephane Rathert, Bryant (Jenna) Harsy; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; along with other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Horace and Jewell Hastings; siblings Bob (Pat) Hastings, Dorothy Ann (Gordon) Bailey; and his son-in-law Charlie Parker; and his fur buddy Benelli.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 10 – 12 PM at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home under the direction of Binkley-Ross, located at 800 North Market Street in Marion. Funeral services will begin at noon, with Pastor Adam Brown and Kenny Orr officiating. Interment will follow in Rosehill Cemetery in Marion.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gary’s honor to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to Arnold View Freewill Baptist Church youth group.
He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
