Howard Earl Dixon, 95, of Marion, Illinois passed away peacefully surrounded by family on his birthday, December 22, 2023. Howard was the son of Lon and Lucille (nee Jacobson) Dixon.
He was a graduate of Herrin High School. Howard nobly served our grateful nation in the United States Army from which he received a World War II victory medal.
Howard married Mary (nee Roberts) Dixon on December 4, 1953, in Corinth, Mississippi. Together they shared nearly 70 years of marriage until her passing on July 3, 2023. From that union they had three children Keith, Kevin, and Daron. Howard had previously worked at N.O. Nelson Electric and Caliper Plumbing. When his boys were young, Howard was able to attend Barber school in Decatur, Illinois while working nights at United Parcel Service. After completing the training, he opened Howard’s Barber Shop just off the Square on North Market Street in Marion, Illinois. For over 30 years he used his skills to give confidence to men by giving them a haircut that suited them and made them feel great. After retirement he delivered parts for Napa Auto Parts. He is remembered for being an easy going, caring, pleasant, and helpful man. He took care of and loved his family well. Always attending all the kids’ activities, spending special time with his grandkids watching movies and drinking RC Cola. He enjoyed hunting everything from deer, squirrel, rabbits and turkey to bluegill fishing and watching old westerns, Gunsmoke being his favorite. He could often be found tending to his vegetable garden, mowing his grass or gathering worms from his worm bed in the backyard to ready himself for some good fishing. He was known for his sweet tooth and never turned down a good dessert. He was very fond of chocolate, pineapple upside down cake, and cherry pie, all to be washed down with a cup of black coffee.
He is survived by his sons, Keith (Kim) Dixon; Kevin (Kim) Dixon; his grandchildren Dezirae (Will) Tatum; Kyle Dixon; Kurt (Emma) Dixon; and Jesse Phillips; great grandchildren Margot and Calvin Dixon; Logan Morgan; Bella Gregory; Luke Gregory; Ellington Tatum; Courtney Tatum; Lawson Tatum; and Gia Phillips; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Kenneth and Delores Roberts.
