Marion ****With Flag***** Jack Edward Pipes, 75, a long time resident of Danville, Illinois and founder of the Jack Pipes Insurance Agency, passed away on October 11, 2002 at 9:45 A.M. in Marion, Illinois. He was a remarkable man and wonderful friend to many. Born and raised in Terre Haute, Indiana. Mr. Pipes graduated from Laboratory State High School in 1945. That year he was appointed to West Point and accepted into the Academy. He declined and opted instead to enlist in the Army during World War II. He was sent to Germany and attached to General George Patton?s Third Army. While there, one of his duties was to guard Nazi War prisoners at the Nurenburg Trial?s After the war ended, Mr. Pipes attended Indiana State University, graduating in 1951. He was employed by the State of Indiana Insurance Department of Rating until 1953. He then worked for United States Fidelity and Guaranty Insurance Company in Indianapolis until 1956. Mr. Pipes came to Danville in 1957 to work for the Wolford Insurance Agency and eventually formed his own company, the Jack Pipes Insurance Agency which eventually merged with Heartland Insurance of Danville in 1998. He was married to Betty Jean Canady from 1953 until her death in April of 1977. He and Betty had two children- John Canady Pipes and Amy Ann Pipes who survive him. He is also survived by three grandchildren- Eliza, Jessica and Jack Ross. In 1985, he married Shirley Yates Hill in Phoenix, Arizona. She survives him. Jack was an avid golfer and member of the Danville Country Club for 43 years. He and Shirley traveled extensively during their 17 years together most recently navigating a lengthy trip to Australia. He really loved life and never stopped continuing to discover. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, October 22, at 11:00 A.M. at the Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home. Speakers will include Gilbert Saikley, Dr. L. Royce Larsen and Richard F. Henley. Entombment will be in Springhill Cemetery and Mausoleum in Danville, Illinois. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening, October 13, 2002 from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice or ALS Foundation (Lou Gehrigs Disease).
