Herrin- Jerry Dene Houchens, 71, of Herrin, died at 2:15 PM, Saturday, May 8, 2004 at Herrin Hospital.
Jerry was born on May 11, 1932 in Barron County, KY to William Robert & Grace (Atnip) Houchens. He married Gloria Varacalli on April 6, 1982 in Lincoln, NE. She survives of Herrin.
Mr. Houchens served with the Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict and was a life member of the DAV, as well as an ordained minister, having attended Western Kentucky State College, Campbellsville College, and the Baptist Seminary in Louisville, KY.
Jerry was retired as Executive Director of the Boy Scouts of America. He served with the Boy Scouts in Kentucky, Delaware, Missouri, Illinois & Nebraska. He was promoted and received awards many times during his thirty- two years of service. He was a member of rotary for more than forty years and received the Paul Harris Fellow. After retirement in 1992 he served Glasgow Baptist Church as an Adult Sunday School Teacher. He also taught Bible Classes at the nursing home for several years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Herrin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother; Eugene Houchens, and sister; Marie Warren.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, May 12, 2004 at A.F.Crow Funeral Home in Glasgow, KY. Rev. Scott Mackey will officiate. Burial will follow at Glasgow Cemetery in Glasgow. Military rites will be performed at graveside. Visitation will be from 9:00 Am until time of service Wednesday at AF Crow Funeral Home. Local visitation will be from 6-9:00 PM, Monday, May 10, 2004 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.
