John Heckwine

John Rollie Heckwine, of Carbondale, Illinois passed away on September 3, 2024, at Carbondale Memorial Hospital. He was born October 31, 1949, in Mattoon, Illinois, the son of John Heckwine and Norma Ruth Curtis.

On October 27, 1967, he married Marsha Heckwine at the First Christian Church, in Flora, Illinois. Together they happily shared almost 57 years of marriage.

In 1989, he and his wife moved to Carbondale, Illinois from Chicago, Illinois, so that he could better enjoy the outdoors. As an avid hunter and fisherman, John loved spending time at Little Grassy Lake, fishing for bass and blue gill. He also enjoyed hunting for deer and squirrels. He loved reading his Bible and to be around friends at church and fellowship. He was a member of East Liberty Church, and at times served as a substitute Sunday school teacher.

John spent his time working in masonry, as a brick layer at Union Hall Local #8.

John is survived by his wife, Marsha; children Shane Heckwine, Julie Wing, and Ryan Heckwine.  Grandchildren Dani Heckwine, Damen Heckwine, Zachary Heckwine, Cierra Halaska (Brandon), Brittany Lindsey, Preston Greff, Great grandchildren, Lilionna, Zayden, Maddox, Odin, Ryder, Alice, Luke, and Phoenix; his stepmother, Mary Gaultney and sister- in- law, Sally Heckwine along with other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Don Heckwine and sister Linda Scully.

John will be dearly missed by his friends and family but will always remain cherished by those who knew him.

All services are private. Arrangements have been entrusted to Binkley-Ross Funeral Home in Marion, Illinois.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorial donations be directed to Diabetes Foundation.
