He bartended for his son at Mary’s Restaurant, and most recently, before he fell ill, could be found at Kokopelli Golf Course, where he was able to “work” at golf, a pastime he learned at an early age from his dad- Bill Hays.
He was a member of various civic organizations throughout his career, including the American Legion, but the volunteer work he most enjoyed was with the Herrin Junior Ball League. He kept up the field for game day and helped out wherever he was needed. In his younger years, he enjoyed drag racing cars, and was a talented musician who could play the guitar and drums.
