Myra Gwen Wristen

Myra Gwen (Buckner) Wristen, 76, of Marion, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her home on March 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Gwen was born on August 9, 1948, in Carbondale, Illinois, to Vernon and Helen (Sanders) Buckner. She dedicated over 36 years of her life as an office manager in the radiology department at Herrin Hospital, where she was known for her kindness, dedication, and warm presence.

In August 2003, Myra married Tom Wristen. Their time together was brief but cherished, as Tom passed away in July 2004.

Gwen’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her children, Angie and Kevin Helfrich and Erik and Belinda Pritchett; her grandchildren, Lia and Darian Wheaton, Wyatt (Emma) Gabby, Derik Pritchett, and Dani Griffith; and her great-grandchildren, Evelyn Wheaton and Owen Wheaton. She also leaves behind her twin sister, Glen (Sonny) Burton; siblings, Kirk (Debbie) Buckner and Jon Cayce (Terra) Buckner; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Tom.

Gwen had a zest for life and a passion for the things that brought her joy. She loved swimming, dining out, and planting flowers. Traveling was one of her favorite pastimes, and she was affectionately known as “The Catwoman” because of her deep love for cats.

In accordance with her wishes, Gwen will be cremated, and a graveside service will be held at Coal Bank Springs Cemetery on Tuesday, April 1, at 11:00 AM. The cemetery is located at 8659 Dykersburg Rd., Marion, Illinois. Those planning to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery shortly before 11:00 AM.

Arrangements are entrusted to Blue Funeral Home under the direction of Binkley-Ross.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Gwen’s honor to Hospice of Southern Illinois, with gratitude for the care and support they provide.
