Herrin- Nellie Simmons, 90, of Herrin, passed away at, 3:40 AM, Thursday, November 11, 2004 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Nellie was born on May 2, 1914 in Cairo, IL to Simon & Latifa (Koury) Simmons. She retired as a consultant for the Department of Education after having obtained her Masters Degree at SIU-C in 1970. She was a longtime Herrin substitute teacher as well as having taught special education at West Side School in Herrin. Miss Simmons was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Herrin. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers Association, and National Education Association and enjoyed playing Canasta with her friends. The thing she enjoyed most was the visits from her nieces and nephews and all the other special people in her life. SURVIVORS: Sister- Martha Lee Murphy- Phoenix, AZ Nieces & Nephews: Mike Simmons & wife Tammy- Marion Fred Ellis Simmons- Herrin Arthur Simmons & wife Gail- Atlanta, GA Christy Cripps- Herrin Lois Nell Marks & husband Jack- Phoenix, AZ Lee Ann Fozzard & husband Randy- Phoenix, AZ Great Nieces & Nephews: Richard Simmons C. Rex Fozzard Michelle Crawshaw Tiffie Rosen Lois Ann Fozzard Kyle & Cory Cripps Sean Simmons Justin Killion Steven Simmons Stephanie Simmons Eric Simmons Erica Simmons Several Great Great Nieces & Nephews Several Cousins Many Loving Friends She was preceded in death by her parents, sister; Lula Simmons, and two brothers; Richard & Fred Simmons. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Friday November 19th at the First Presbyterian Church in Herrin. Visitation will be held from 10-11am at the church on Friday November 19th. As per her wishes, her body was donated to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin has been entrusted with funeral arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church- Elevator Fund- and will be accepted both at the funeral home and church.
