Herrin- Samuel L. Reichert, 85, of Herrin, formerly of Plainfield passed away at 1:00 PM, Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Sam was born on July 22, 1919 in Cambria to Raymond M. & Jewel (Smith) Reichert. He married Shirley J. Miller on March 15, 1953 in Plainfield. They shared fifty-one devoted years until she preceded him in death on January 19. Her passing left a void which couldnt be replaced.
He was a WWII Army veteran having served in the European, African & Middle Eastern Theatres. Sam served with the 59th and drove a half track. He was awarded many ribbons and medals for feats of bravery including the Purple Heart for injuries he received in action, in an attempt to improve communication between the varied armored divisions. After his return stateside; Sam owned and operated Sams Service Station in Plainfield; a service and tow station. He and Shirley were perfect business partners. Sam ran the day to day business; he could modify and build the tow trucks for the wrecker business, and she took care of customer service.
In his spare time, he enjoyed attending auctions and markets and buying and restoring antiques. He enjoyed working in the yard and when he was able he liked to hunt and fish.
