Herrin- Samuel L. Reichert, 85, of Herrin, formerly of Plainfield passed away at 1:00 PM, Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Sam was born on July 22, 1919 in Cambria to Raymond M. & Jewel (Smith) Reichert. He married Shirley J. Miller on March 15, 1953 in Plainfield. They shared fifty-one devoted years until she preceded him in death on January 19. Her passing left a void which couldnt be replaced. He was a WWII Army veteran having served in the European, African & Middle Eastern Theatres. Sam served with the 59th and drove a half track. He was awarded many ribbons and medals for feats of bravery including the Purple Heart for injuries he received in action, in an attempt to improve communication between the varied armored divisions. After his return stateside; Sam owned and operated Sams Service Station in Plainfield; a service and tow station. He and Shirley were perfect business partners. Sam ran the day to day business; he could modify and build the tow trucks for the wrecker business, and she took care of customer service. In his spare time, he enjoyed attending auctions and markets and buying and restoring antiques. He enjoyed working in the yard and when he was able he liked to hunt and fish. SURVIVORS: Son- Scott Reichert- Herrin Son & daughter in law- Samuel L. & Lynn Reichert, Jr.- Plainfield Daughter & son in law- Stacy J. & Edwin Bennett- Anna Daughter- Sharon S. Kozak- Plainfield Seven Grandchildren: Tim Harmon Sunny Reichert Ken Kozak Jacob Kozak Scott Bennett Bo Bennett Mike Bennett Four Sisters: Jeweldean Karsten- Carbondale Connie Emery- Marion Ruby Coleman- Tucson, AZ Alice Luten- Zeigler Several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, two brother; Paul & Frank Reichert, and one sister; Arlene Jacobs. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Military rites will be performed at graveside by the Herrin VFW & American Legion Posts. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service, Tuesday at the funeral home.
