Sylvia Louise (Dietz) Jacobs

July 8, 1927 — November 24, 2024

Marion

Sylvia Louise Jacobs (née Dietz), beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother departed this world on November 24, 2024, at the age of 97 due to complications from a stroke.

Sylvia is survived by her younger brother Lawrence F. Dietz of Desoto, her sons George A. Jacobs and William B. Jacobs, her grandchildren Amanda (Jason) Jacys and Craig Jacobs, her great-grandchildren Wilhelmina and Wyatt Jacys, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.  Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Elmer B. Jacobs, her brother Herman Dietz, her sister Katherine Barbaro, and her daughter in-law, Elaine C. Jacobs.

Sylvia was born on July 8, 1927, in Desoto, Illinois and grew up on the family dairy farm.  She completed high school and worked as a beautician for many years.  She met her husband, Elmer, on a blind date, and shortly thereafter, they married on August 21, 1948.

A devoted mother and housewife, Sylvia supported Elmer and her sons through their educational journeys.  She valued their accomplishments and encouraged continued learning in their endeavors. Sylvia kept close ties to her community and invested heavily in its success.  Through her church community and various civic clubs, such as Rotary and the Red Hatters, Sylvia worked to better the lives of those around her and the ties that bound her community together.

After Elmer’s death, Sylvia dedicated herself to the health and success of her remaining family members.  She returned to Chicago suburbs and supported her grandchildren Amanda and Craig through their formative years.  Seeking to be active, she also returned to work at Jewel and actively participated in her faith community.  Sylvia later returned to southern Illinois to live out her remaining years as a member at Zion United Church of Christ in Marion, Illinois.

A celebration of Sylvia's life will be held at a later date with burial at Indian Hill Cemetery.
