Herrin-Thomas L. Baker, 81, of Herrin passed away at 4:40 A.M., Friday, April 30, 2004 at Herrin Hospital.
Tom was born on May 7, 1922 in Herrin to James Wiley & Marria (Edwards) Baker. He married his wife of fifty-eight years, Lillian L. Oliver, on December 14, 1945 in Herrin. She survives of Herrin.
Mr. Baker was a WWII Air Force Veteran having served in the Medical Branch. He was a life member of the Hyde Pillow Post #1301 of Herrin.
After serving his country, Tom maintained several careers prior to his retirement. He worked as an LPN at the Marion Veterans Administration Medical Center for thirty-four years and he and Lil ran their own beauty shop in Herrin for some time. Tom was most associated with being a long time funeral assistant at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Tom worked for fifty-three years at the funeral home, beginning shortly after WWII. He worked visitations, assisted with daily activities, was a hairdresser, tailor, organist and soloist.
Tom was well known for his culinary skills and often cooked for his family and church family. He was an active member, playing the piano during church services, at Park Avenue Church of God in Herrin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, May 3, 2004 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. J.K. Tiffin & Rev. Terry Griffith will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-9:00 PM, Sunday, May 2, 2004 at the funeral home.
