William (Bill) Wyatt Mitchem Sr., a man of immeasurable talent, unwavering integrity, and a heart as big as the songs he played, passed away at 6:35 pm on March 2, 2025, in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Born on August 17, 1943, in Granite City, Illinois, to John Wyatt Mitchem and Glenda (Hicks) Mitchem, Bill was a man who walked his own path, never one to follow the crowd. He was a musician at heart, an auctioneer, and a natural storyteller. In the late 60s and early 70s, his voice filled the airwaves of WGNU in Granite City, Illinois, where he hosted a show reminiscent of The Louisiana Hayride, bringing the sounds of country music to eager ears. Icons like Conway Twitty and Waylon Jennings shared his stage, drawn not only to his talent but to the genuine man behind the microphone.

Three times, RCA Records came calling, offering him the dream so many chase. Three times, he turned them down, firm in his belief that he wouldn’t gamble on a “maybe.” To the world, he could have been a star. To those who knew him, he already was.

Beyond the spotlight, Bill was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Linda, with whom he built a life filled with love, music, and an open home that welcomed more than 15 foster children over the years. He worked tirelessly as a supervisor at Laidlaw Transit and in every passion he pursued. Bill was a longtime resident of Marion, Illinois, where he made lasting memories and connections.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Mitchem; his grandson, Dakota Mitchem; his parents; four brothers; and one sister.

He is survived by his son, William (Billy) Mitchem Jr. and his wife, Heather; his grandchildren; his great-grandchildren; two brothers; five sisters; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends whose lives he touched.

Arrangements were entrusted to Mitchell Hughes Funeral Home under the direction of Binkley-Ross.  Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 1:00 pm in Rosehill Cemetery in Marion, Illinois. Those planning to attend are invited to meet at the cemetery shortly before 1:00 pm. Please visit www.binkleyross.com to leave condolences online.

William (Bill) Wyatt Mitchem Sr. was a star to some, a friend to many, and a hero to his son. His song may have ended, but his melody will play on forever.
